Welcome Home: A Letter to the Incoming Class of 2014

August 30, 2010

August 30, 2010 – First day of classes

Paul Gawlas, Class of 2010, writes a letter to the incoming Class of 2014:

Hello!

Oh the places you will go, the people you meet here… Welcome to the best years of your life, if you let them be. Welcome Home.

You are entering a place that will challenge you in different ways than you may have expected. You might have questions as to where you are going or what you are to do in life, but do not worry. You have all the time in the world to answer those. Now, you have a gift. You have four whole years to discover who you are. You have four years to build your knowledge about the world. You have four years to meet people who will change your life. You have four years to grow, to live, and to love. You have four years to find you… to find who you are. Never again in your life will you have these years, and once they are through, you will always remember them fondly. I would encourage you to use every second of your time and cherish every moment.

Look around any room. You may see many faces who you do not know, but by the end of your journey, some of your best friends might be in that room now. You have nothing to lose and the whole world to gain, so go for it. You never know which second will mean the most, which second will change your life.

Have courage in the face of great odds, and always know that there is someone looking out for you. You are never alone. Always question. Always have faith. Always forgive. Always apologize. Always love. You can be surprised at the legacy that simply love can leave.

God Bless Always,

Paul Gawlas
